hey im new to team chevy. got my first car not that long ago a 1968 chevelle malibu and it runs pretty good. heres some spicifics

307 engine stock
powerglide(2 speed) tranny
2 bbl rodchester carb
10 bolt?
with a/c (not hooked up and tied off to the side)

im looking to bulk up the car and get a 454 and 5 speed, but thats after i get it comfortably dependable now. i plan in having it as a everyday drive car but i still wanna take it to the track and tare it up. anyone know any good combo for engine, tranny and carb? that could fit into the car without alot of banging and cutting. any info would help thanks

After you change the frame stands for the engine mounts on the frame to "the other stand" any engine will drop right in. For some dumb reason, GM used differant engine mounts and frame stands on the 307. Just about all other V-8's have the othe kind of frame stand and mount.

If you want power and gas milage, think "strong big block with a relatively mild combination and a turbo." An overdrive trans will also help lower rpm's on the highway and give another bit of fuel milage. 3.73 gears will also help.

If I were to build what you're talking about, I would go with a 454, .060 over, .400 long rod, 9:1 compression, aluminum heads, electronic injection and a pretty good sized turbo. The longer rod will keep the piston at top dead center longer and alow fuel to be burned more completely. This will allow you to run a lower octane fuel. (so will the lower compression ratio) Adjust the boost to run at 8-10 psi. The trick is to use as little of the engine as possible while driving around normally and get as much out of the power adder as you can when you nail it. ....of course, this is just what I would do.

Good luck with the new wheels. I love 68's. Mine is going to have a blown, alcohol injected 496 big block. I'm not very worried about fuel consumption. :D
